By Kellie McDonald and David Ringstrom

The Friends of Grant Park Pool is pleased to announce two community pool parties this season. The first is on Monday, May 30, which is also the opening day of the 2005 season. This event, sponsored by District One City Councilmember Carla Smith, will run from 4:00 to 6:00 PM.

A second event is planned for Friday, June 24 to celebrate the improvements that Hands On Atlanta volunteers make on June 18. On the 18th an estimated 800 members of Atlanta's legal community will converge on Grant Park and the Grant Park Pool for Service Juris day. The June 24th celebration will kick off at 5:00 pm with swimming and fun until 8:00 PM. Please RSVP for the June 24 party to kellie@grantparkpool.org. The rain date will be Friday, July 8th.

Everyone is invited to both events! Additional details will be posted at www.grantparkpool.org.

Grant Park Pool Continues to Improve
By David Ringstrom

Just in time for the 2005 swimming season, the City of Atlanta is making improvements to both locker rooms, as well as installing diaper-changing tables. In addition, new signage is expected, along with improved staffing and upgrades to the filtration system. The pool area will also have furniture this year! The City is buying two table/chair/umbrella sets, which will be matched by Hands On Atlanta and the Friends of Grant Park Pool, for a total of 6 sets.

Still more changes to the pool should appear on June 18 as part of Hands On Atlanta's Service Juris day. An estimated 800 volunteers from Atlanta's legal community will converge on Grant Park and the Grant Park Pool. Expected pool projects include painting, landscaping, and other aesthetic improvements. Keep in mind that the pool will be closed to swimming on this day.

Plans are also afoot to make concessions available at the pool this summer. A refrigerator has been donated for use by the pool staff and concession sales. Logistical issues are still being sorted through, but if you can help in this endeavor, please contact Melissa Devereaux at melissa@grantparkpool.org or 404-221-0888.

Finally, the Friends of Grant Park Pool is organizing fund raising efforts to pay for additional improvements to the pool, as well as swimming lessons for children. A partnership with Adams Realtors is already in place. Adams will donate $250 to the pool for any buyer or seller that mentions being a friend of the Grant Park Pool. Plans are also underway for a fundraising event at Six Feet Under restaurant on Thursday, May 19. Visit www.grantparkpool.org for details, and to keep up with the latest happenings at the pool!
