Grant Park Pool Improvements Planned by David Ringstrom
In late 2004, the Friends of Grant Park Pool (FGPP) formed. In January
2005 we were formally acknowledged as a subcommittee of the Grant
Park Neighborhood Association's Parks Committee. Our goal is to ensure
that the Grant Park Pool is a nice, clean, safe place for everyone to
use.
Some of our recent activities have included conducting a survey, which
confirmed high neighborhood interest in the pool. However, three primary
concerns exist:
- Poor maintenance of the pool facility
- Cleanliness of the pool, especially the kiddie pool
- Ratio of unsupervised children to lifeguards and the resulting safety
problems
Subsequent to the survey, FGPP investigated the possibility of privatizing
the pool. Preliminary findings showed that costs of privately maintaining
such a large pool are prohibitively high, and that other privatized pools
have had mixed results. The primary downside of privatizing the pool is
the risk that if the costs aren't covered the pool could be permanently
closed.
Fortunately, FGPP has also been in continuous contact with the City
of Atlanta, including council members Carla
Smith and Ceasar Mitchell, as well as Parks and Recreation Commissioner
Dianne Harnell Cohen. The City has been receptive to our interest in the
pool. Indeed, plans are afoot for the City to make some cosmetic improvements,
bolstered by volunteer help from Hands
On Atlanta. FGPP is also working to develop a range of activities
to increase neighborhood interest, attendance, and involvement in the
pool. Although no dates have been scheduled yet, a rough timeline follows:
- March 2005 - Meeting with City Aquatics Director Curtis Winston
to discuss neighborhood concerns about the pool and generate ideas and
action teams to begin to address them
- March 2005 - Meeting with City Parks Designer Sushma Dersch
about long-range plans for Grant Park's Pool Design
- April 2005 - Workdays with Hands On Atlanta to spruce up the
pool for the summer
- May 2005 - Pool Opening Party, Meet the Lifeguards, Neighborhood
Swim
As all Grant Park residents know, improvements to our neighborhood primarily
come from within. There is much work to be done to turn around our pool,
so please get involved! We need help in the following areas: marketing/PR,
facilities, fundraising, program development, and concessions. Learn more
and join the Friends of Grant Park Pool today (it's free!). You can also
