June 2005 Porch Press articleFriends of Grant Park Pool Making a Splash!By David Ringstrom The Friends of Grant Park Pool have been working with the City of Atlanta to make the pool a better and more welcoming aspect of our community. Just before the pool opened on May 30, the City of Atlanta renovated the locker rooms at the pool by patching and painting the walls, replacing broken fixtures, as well as other repairs. In addition, there will be furniture at the pool this summer! Six table/chair/umbrella combinations have been secured under a three-way match: two from the City of Atlanta, two from Hands on Atlanta, and two from the Friends of Grant Park Pool (FGPP). The City also filled the pool this year a week earlier than usual, to help ensure that the pool opened on time, and that any problems found upon filling the pool could be remedied quickly. Staffing has also been improved, with an enhanced management presence supplementing the lifeguards at all times. The Friends were able to raise money to pay for their two tables via a successful fundraiser sponsored by Six Feet Under restaurant. The combination of a raffle and dine-out raised over $1,500. The Friends would like to recognize the following businesses that provided prizes for the raffle: Swim N' Sport at Lenox Mall, Business Innovations and Nail World at 465 Boulevard. In addition, the following individuals donated prizes: Craig Williams, Jen and Dave Haslam, and Traci Gingold. The Friends would also like to thank District One City Councilperson Carla Smith for sponsoring an opening day pool party on May 30. The excitement at the pool continues to build. Deloitte and Touche scheduled an Impact Day on June 3, to prepare the pool for this summer's biggest event: Service Juris on Saturday, June 18. On this day over 800 members of Atlanta's legal community are scheduled to work at the park, in conjunction with the Grant Park Conservancy and Hands On Atlanta. A contingent of these volunteers will be giving the pool a major facelift. Just about every surface will be painted, and new landscaping will be installed, among other projects. The Friends of Grant Park Pool are asking for community support to supplement these volunteers. Please consider helping the Hands On Atlanta volunteers in the morning of June 18, or by helping paint two murals in the afternoon. One mural, measuring 46' by 4', will incorporate the words "Jump into your pool". A second mural, 110' by 7', will cover the current Swim/Dive wall with a wave pattern. Renderings of both murals can be viewed at www.grantparkpool.org. Please contact Simone Capote to sign up for mural painting, either from 1:00 to 3:30, or 3:30 to 6:00 on Saturday, June 18. There are other opportunities for you to help the Grant Park Pool this summer. The Friends are seeking volunteers for two or four hour shifts selling concessions on weekends running from June 4 to September 4. All proceeds will be directly reinvested in the pool, both for additional improvements, as well as programs such as free swimming lessons. Please contact Susan Rouse to help the pool raise money by selling concessions! If your schedule doesn't permit you to help out on June 18 or with concession sales, there is yet another way that you can get involved. The Friends of Grant Park Pool are now accepting donations online at www.grantparkpool.org. Donations are tax deductible, and any amount is welcome to keep the momentum at the pool going. Finally, the Friends of Grant Park Pool are sponsoring a mid-summer pool party on Friday, June 24 from 5:00 to 8:00. Join the Friends and your neighbors, see all of the improvements at the pool, and honor all of the city workers and volunteers that have helped turn the pool around. There will be music, swimming and fun activities for the whole family! Please keep in mind that the normal pool fees will apply for this party, which means adults are $2, children age 6 to 16 and seniors at $1, while children under 5 are free! RSVP to Kellie McDonald so that the Friends can plan the celebration accordingly. It's going to be a great summer at the Grant Park Pool. Jump in by volunteering, donating, or simply making use of the pool! Learn more about the Friends of Grant Park Pool by visiting www.grantparkpool.org. |
